AVG Antivirus Free delivers strong protection and a wide range of features with little system impact, but its upgrade offers are aggressive.

If absolutely everyone installed antivirus software, malware writers would have a tough time making ends meet. They might even have to take honest jobs. To advance this noble cause, many vendors, AVG included, offer free antivirus protection for home use. Businesses, however, must pay 39.99 per year or 54.99 for three licenses for AVG AntiVirus 2015. Paid users also get Online Shield and Data Safe components that aren t found in the free edition.

AVG s main window relies on a visual system to represent how much protection you have, and how well it s working. Five large buttons represent five major protection areas: Computer, Web, Identity, Email, and Firewall. A full or partial circle indicates whether all or just some components in a given area are present the firewall circle is blank, as that feature is reserved for AVG s suite. A green circle means all is well; if it s not green, your protection needs attention in that area.

With one exception, the antivirus protection in this product is identical to what you get in AVG AntiVirus Free 2015. Read that review for full details; I ll summarize here.

AVG AntiVirus 2015 Lab Tests Chart

AVG s ratings from the independent testing labs are good, overall, but not stellar. In four tests by AV-Comparatives, it managed one Advanced rating, two Advanced ratings, and one Standard rating. Dennis Technology Labs certified AVG at the C level, the lowest passing level.

See How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests

In my own hands-on malware blocking test, AVG wiped out 72 percent of the samples on sight, and whacked a few more when I tried to launch them. Its overall malware blocking score was 7.8 of 10 possible points, which is rather low. Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2015 aced this test, with a perfect 10 points. Do bear in mind, though, that I give more weight to the independent antivirus lab tests, as they can bring vastly more resources to bear on testing.

Online Shield

Online Shield, absent in the free edition, works to steer the browser away from malware-hosting websites. Naturally I had to run my malicious URL blocking test again, to put this feature through its paces.

AVG AntiVirus 2015 Malware Blocking Chart

Starting with a feed of newly-discovered malicious URLs supplied by MRG-Effitas, I attempted to visit each URL in turn. Discarding any that returned 404 or other errors, I noted whether the antivirus blocked access to the URL, quarantined the malware payload, or did nothing. I kept this up until I had about 100 data points.

See How We Test Malware Blocking

With no online shield, AVG s free antivirus wiped out 38 percent of the downloaded files, a bit below the current average of 41 percent. The commercial edition s Online Shield blocked access to 19 percent of the URLs, and real-time protection wiped out 19 percent of the downloaded malicious executables. Amazingly, using two completely different sets of URLs the two products came up with precisely the same score. The current leader in this test is McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015, with 85 percent blocked.
