Lisez-les sur l écran couleur LCD de 4.3 ou sur la TV en haute résolution jusqu à 720 x 576 résolution DVD grâce à la DVR station. Lisez les formats vidéo les plus répandus, dont les MPEG-4, WMV et WMV protégés, et même MPEG-4 AAC/H.264 . MP4 QuickTime files, MPEG-2, et VOB avec les software plug-ins en option disponibles sur ce site. The Archos 404 is the baby of Archos s new Generation 4 line of players; it has similar features to the Archos 604, but in a smaller package. Based around a 30GB hard drive, the 404 s bright 3.5-inch LCD, smooth video playback, and broad video file-format support make it a very desirable portable video player. Add the optional docking station 99, and you ve got yourself a nice little portable digital video recorder as well. One real drawback, though, is that unlike the 604, the 404 s battery is not removable. In addition, the device s video battery life isn t what it should be.

Measuring 0.6 by 3.9 by 3 inches, the player has similar dimensions to a 60GB fifth-gen iPod, except that the 404 is wider, by about 30 percent, and heavier, weighing 6.8 ounces. The unit s 3.5-inch screen is in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio as opposed to the 604 s widescreen format, making it ideal for watching TV. Widescreen content looks fine, but the letterboxing makes the image a bit small, vertically speaking, for my eyes. The two-way rocker buttons along the right side of the screen take some getting used to, but they re not particularly confusing. One thing I didn t like, however, was that the 404 s hold button locks everything but the volume controls. A headphone output on the left side doubles as an audio-video line output, so you can output video to an external TV by pressing the TV/LCD button.

Included in the box are a drawstring carrying bag, earbuds with inline volume control, a USB cable, a silver plastic docking station adapter for use with the optional docking station, and printed documentation. Strangely, the device doesn t come with A/V cables for the TV output capability.

The 404 s menus are icon-based with pop-up text, and they re very clear and easy to navigate. You can load the device with video, audio, and photos via Windows Media Player, and you can also drag and drop content via Windows or Mac OS, which is a big plus. Plug-ins will soon be available from Archos that will let you play back most DRM-free video files with the following extensions. mpg. vob. ps. mp4. m4v, and. mov. They will also add support for the H.264 video codec. The 404 also displays photos in JPEG, BMP, and PNG formats, and you can transfer images directly from digital cameras to the 404 without a PC, via the optional docking station s USB Host feature.

Recordings made via the optional dock are in DivX-encoded AVI format using the MPEG-4 Simple Profile at up to 640 by 480 pixels and up to 30 frames per second. Supported audio formats include WMA, MP3, protected WMA including PlaysForSure support for both audio and video content, and WAV. AAC files will be playable via a plug-in as well.

The Archos 404 s playlisting capabilities are excellent. You can create, delete, edit, and rename via a virtual keyboard multiple playlists directly on the device without a PC. Another handy feature is that when you plug in the proprietary USB cable, you have the option to choose whether the 404 enters MTP mode for syncing with Windows Media Player, USB Mass Storage mode for drag-and-drop loading on Macs and PCs, or simple charging mode for playing music or video while the device charges.

I tested the subjective sound quality of the 404 with the included earbuds and with my Etymotic ER-4P in-ear headphones. The stock earbuds aren t particularly efficient and they don t sound all that great. They don t provide a lot of bass, the highs are a bit muted, and the mids are a bit overpowering. When I swapped them out for my Etymotic headphones, the highs improved and the mids balanced out, but I could hear weakness from the bottom of the midbass down to the low bass. I tried using the bass boost setting to improve this, but it didn t do much to beef up the very lowest sounds, and it muddied the overall sound a bit. I also used the custom five-band equalizer, but that didn t improve the bottom end much either.

You can record audio via the 404 s built-in mic in WAV format ADPCM or PCM at up to a 48-kHz sampling rate. If you have the optional docking station, you can also do line-in audio recording at the same specs. With the built-in mic, you ll hear a bit of digital noise in your recordings from the mic s proximity to the hard drive, but the line-in recordings I made via the docking station were excellent.

Video playback is smooth and clear, with vivid colors. If the quality of your video files is good, then they ll look good on the Archos 404 s bright screen. Just keep in mind that the pixels aren t as densely packed together as they are on, say, the Creative Zen Vision. The horizontal viewing angle is very good, and I could see true blacks. You can record videos via the optional dock at up to 3,000 Kbps, which outclasses all of the other portable DVRs I ve seen thus far. Files you ve recorded can be played back on a PC or TV screen unless they carry Macrovision copy protection, in which case you re limited to playback on the LCD. You can also record in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios. Photos look great too. You can pan, rotate, and zoom in on images, and you can watch slide shows with musical accompaniment.

I conducted a battery rundown test using a 640-by-480 AVI file Moulin Rouge on the built-in LCD at a comfortable listening level, and I got 3 hours 10 minutes, which is well short of the 4 hours claimed by Archos. This is a bit disappointing, especially given the device s lack of a removable battery. My guess, though, is that the battery life was shorter than expected because I had to turn the volume up fairly high to get a comfortable listening level from the included earbuds. Most companies test with the volume at halfway up or just above that.

I can t help but be disappointed that you have to buy a 99 optional accessory to use the audio and video line-in recording feature of the Archos 404. But even without the docking station, the device is a very good portable video player that can output video and audio to an external TV and slips easily into a pocket. My biggest gripes are the non-removable battery and relatively short battery life, but if you can live with these power issues, then the Archos 404 is satisfying in most other regards and is priced appropriately.
